Activities and Projects
Fall migration monitoring has taken place at Rocky Point since 1994. Initiated by the Canadian Wildlife Service, the responsibility was taken on by a volunteer group headed by David Allinson, Michael Shepherd, Colleen O'Brien and Bev Glover. The season generally runs from July 21 to October 18.
Initiated by Paul Levesque in 2002, more than 1900 Northern Saw-whet Owls have been banded at Rocky Point. Owls have been recaptured and recovered in Washington, California and Manitoba. Banding takes place between mid-September and the end of October.
Initiated by Cam Finlay in 1996, the Hummingbird Project has grown to more than 10 locations throughout BC and two in Alberta.
RPBO manages three MAPS locations in the Victoria area: Rocky Point, Royal Roads University, and Witty's Lagoon Regional Park. The project was started in 2003 by Paul Levesque.
RPBO provides community education through bird-banding workshops held in the spring and through public presentations available throughout the year. Presenters are available in several locations around the province. The RPBO website also provides links to resources for birders and others who are interested in bird conservation.
