Birding with your kids or grandkids offers a wide range of benefits far beyond the birds! Connect with nature, learn together, spend time cultivating an appreciation and respect for nature in children. What a wonderful way to teach about conservation and environmental stewardship, while enjoying a fun, relaxing and endlessly interesting hobby as a family.
Would you like to start birding with your kids or grandkids, but not be sure where to start?
Follow RPBO on social media or check our events calendar and email bulletins for community events that are family-friendly, where we often have birding activities and binoculars you can try! Save the date for our Christmas Bird Count for Kids in December to participate in North America’s longest-running citizen science project, or email education@rpbo.org for ideas on activities you can try with your family.
Join us for a beautiful morning at Mount Douglas Park (PKOLS) for a special walk led by RPBO Education Chair Simone Littledale. Simone is passionate about birds, and is also an elementary educator in Victoria.
The morning will begin with a short introduction about the importance of birds in our ecosystem, and the joy of birdwatching. Simone will point out different bird species, their unique features, and interesting facts about their behaviour. Binoculars will be available to help kids identify the birds they see.
Throughout the walk, Simone will encourage the kids to listen to bird songs, observe their movements and appreciate the beauty of nature. This half-day workshop will help you to get your children or grandchildren genuinely engaged with birds and connecting with nature - without tears!
This is a FREE event but registration is required so that we can communicate with you about event details and in order to provide follow-up materials.
