Bird Science Collaborations
Songbirds as Pollinators, the SaP Project
The SaP Project is a collaborative effort between Colorado State University, the Institute for Bird Populations (IBP), MAPS (Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship), individual bird-banders, and members of the public to collect pollen samples from songbirds, as well as document any flower-foraging behavior. Although some research on songbirds as pollinators has been done in Asia and Europe, the nature and frequency of pollination by North American songbirds has not been systematically investigated until now.
In 2023, Rocky Point Bird Observatory (RPBO) began participating in the SaP Project during our MAPS Monitoring program by collecting pollen samples from certain bird species. By partnering with banding stations and nature enthusiasts, this project will collect pollen samples in addition to observations. Using these pollen samples, they will search for angiosperm DNA and explore exciting, impactful questions about the relationships between North American songbirds and flowering plants. This will be cutting-edge DNA research on songbird pollination!

Christmas Bird Count
RPBO members volunteer with the Christmas Bird Count every year - as counters, Zone Leaders and even Circle Coordinators - and make a huge impact on bird conservation.
The Christmas Bird Count (CBC), North America’s longest-running citizen-science initiative, involves participants in more than 2,000 locations across the Western Hemisphere. Birds Canada oversees the program nationally, in partnership with the National Audubon Society USA. Sustained by volunteer effort and donor support, the CBC produces one of the world’s largest wildlife survey datasets. Each count circle is managed by a volunteer Coordinator, often with support from local birding or naturalist groups. The collected data is used by conservation professionals to evaluate bird population trends and distribution.
Advanced birding experience is not a requirement to join - new participants are matched with seasoned counters. Anyone can join in as a spotter or tally person. The CBC offers something for everyone. Counters may explore their areas by foot, car, boat, or bicycle. Most teams are out all morning (and then some), but shorter shifts are fine too. Joining for whatever time you can give, the guiding principles remain simple: count every bird, and every bird counts.
If you’d rather participate from the comfort of your own home, we are always looking for more to join the Feeder Watch program. You don’t even have to register! Just go to http://christmasbirdcount.ca and click on the Feeder Watch link on count day for instructions and reporting.
