Banding Workshop

Join Rocky Point Bird Observatory for an exciting opportunity to learn the fundamentals of bird monitoring and banding in our comprehensive introductory course! Be part of a program that consistently exceeds expectations and delivers exceptional learning experiences. Participants gain a valuable foundation for volunteering in migration monitoring sessions, allowing them to apply their newly acquired skills under expert guidance.
This is your chance to actively contribute to avian conservation on Vancouver Island while connecting with fellow bird enthusiasts and experienced experts.
The workshop consists of a two-day lecture component online, followed by a two-day field component to be held in Victoria, BC (location to be confirmed). The sessions are run by a NABC-Certified Trainer and Bander.
Lecture Component: The first weekend covers an introduction to bird banding and the basics of aging and sexing, as well as more advanced aging and cycle-based aging techniques.
Field Component: The following weekend are in-person field sessions for an exciting opportunity to further develop ID skills with lab specimens and get hands-on experience conducting mist netting and bird banding with trained professionals. Participants also have the opportunity to learn about bird safety, ethics, and data collection.
