Field component - April 13th and 14th

Let us teach you how to band birds!
Rocky Point is once again offering our introductory course on bird monitoring and banding. This year the lecture component will be online, taking place April 6th and 7th. The field component will take place on April 13th and 14th.Banding a Yellow Warbler
Lecture Component: The online Lecture on April 6th and 7th covers an introduction to bird banding and the basics of aging and sexing, as well as more advanced aging and cycle-based aging techniques.

Field Component:  The following weekend, April 13th and 14th,  is an in-person field session which provides an exciting opportunity to further develop ID skills with lab specimens and get hands-on experience conducting mist netting and bird banding with trained professionals. Participants also have the opportunity to learn about bird safety, ethics, and data collection.

The 2024 Field Trip component is sold out.  We would love to welcome you to the online component!

Why be a part of the online component of the 2024 Bird Banding Workshop?

Join a program that has consistently exceeded expectations and
delivered exceptional learning experiences.

Whether you are a birder, a potential banding program participant, or an experienced volunteer, this workshop provides a comprehensive learning experience that covers essential topics such as avian population monitoring and identifying, aging and sexing birds using physical structure, plumage analysis, and molt patterns. As a participant, you will gain a deep understanding of these subjects from our instructor, Dr. Eric Demers, a North American Banding Council certified instructor, and through open discussion with your course mates, including experienced RPBO volunteers. Questions and requests for clarification are encouraged!

By participating in this online workshop, you will also gain an understanding of the techniques used during banding programs. This will help prepare you for opportunities to build those skills by volunteering with RPBO and/or other projects. Or perhaps you have already volunteered with us or elsewhere and are now seeking a more technical understanding of the aging and sexing process to enable you to work towards a banding credential. While the course (including the field sessions) includes an introduction to how the work is done, nothing can replace the value of considerable practice of field skills over time.

Those who have completed the online component will be given the earliest opportunities to register for the field sessions the next time the course is offered.  You will not be required to redo the online sessions, but many participants have chosen to do so.

This is a great opportunity to connect and learn with fellow bird enthusiasts and experienced experts!

Register here for the online component only.
