Why the Black-throated Gray Warbler?

The Black-throated Gray Warbler reflects both the landscape and the work of Rocky Point Bird Observatory.

Each spring, these striking migrants return to southern Vancouver Island after wintering in the southwestern United States and Mexico. Their arrival marks the height of migration — a season when careful observation helps reveal the health of bird populations and the ecosystems they depend on.

Closely associated with Garry oak habitats and dry coastal forests, the Black-throated Gray Warbler is a meaningful symbol of the region we study and protect. Its bold black-and-white pattern and distinctive yellow highlight also translate beautifully into a recognizable emblem.

As our logo bird, it represents migration, monitoring, and the importance of every observation — because every bird counts.
